Colors and clothing are some of the best ways to reflect your inner mood. In the summer, people wear bright and colorful clothes while during winter, they tend to gravitate towards black or gray. Keep in mind, this doesn’t apply to NYC, where everyone wears black all the time. After all, black is the new black! So what does a girl like me, who favors mostly classic feminine fashion, do when she wants to embrace her inner rock goddess? Combine the black with leather, of course. The result was a rocker chic look that I was quite obsessed with.
The first item I picked was my wet-look, faux leather leggings from H&M. These are a staple for anyone that wishes to don rocker chic attire. They’re also perfect for a night out when paired with a simple loose shirt and heels. For the top, I opted for a metallic turtleneck (perhaps to signify the rock band Metallica! Nah? Too much of a stretch?). If you’re a big rock fan, you could wear a t-shirt with your favorite band’s logo instead.
To add a touch of color, I added a teal skirt belt and blue tassel earrings. I couldn’t help it. The girly-girl in me was screaming to get out and failed to comprehend my sartorial darkness. Of course, I was playing with the skirt/belt during this entire photo shoot. Any time the wind blew, I’d make it a point to stand against it to add dramatic flair to my outfit. So I’m animated, don’t judge me.
The smokey black eye shadow was the final component to finish this look. My inspiration was the rebellious Jenny Humphrey from Gossip Girl. Sure, sometimes she looked like a raccoon. But she looked like a sexy, punk-rock raccoon and that’s good enough for me. I honestly could have worn this makeup all day. Unfortunately, I had zero plans and sitting at home watching Black Mirror with raccoon eyes just didn’t seem appealing.
Punk rock style gained popularity in the 1980s, synonymous with the music. The style can best be defined as a mixture of dark Elizabethan and Gothic elements. Since then, we’ve seen variations of this trend emerge from time to time. A key example is the choker, which was the hot item of this summer. Many designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen have also embraced rocker chic styles. It’s safe to say this trend isn’t going away anytime soon, so stock up on that black liner and studded bracelets now!
