We first learned about Brandon Maxwell when Lady Gaga showed up at the 2016 Oscars in that gorgeous white jumpsuit. Since then, Brandon became an acclaimed designer and is widely renowned for his flowing-yet-figure-hugging gowns. I mean, who can forget that body suit on Serena Williams in Beyonce’s lemonade?? The 31-year-old designer started off as a stylist assistant and now owns an independent fashion house. He is also the fashion director at the Haus of Gaga. This is a milestone for a small-town boy from Longview, Texas who made dresses for his sisters using bed sheets. Of course, even as a child, he was a natural.
Brandon Maxwell debuted his first collection at New York Fashion Week in September 2016. His first designs were architecturally accurate (read: no asymmetrical cutouts here) and embraced the female bodice. Staying true to his style, the FW17 collection recently debuted at NYFW also displayed similar characteristics. However, we are able to see how his looks have matured over time. The capes, bell sleeves and low-cut pant suits remain static through his collections but now have an added flair to them.
The low-cut, single buttoned white pant suit from his SS16 collection has transformed into a silver crepe pant suit with a one sided lapel. The capes and bell sleeves no longer have sharp edges and have become a bit more flowy in nature. But most apparent of all, is the additional color palettes that have come into play. Originally, Brandon only dabbled in black, white and lavender. This collection adds dark burgundy, silver and deep blue hues. This shows a natural progression of the designer, as well as an added comfort with stepping out of his artistic boundaries.
The newest Brandon Maxwell collection is truly enthralling with its leather dresses and rich color schemes. The designer brought a lot of unique looks to us in the past and I truly look forward to what he has in store for the future.
